Silent Sustained Reading (SSR)
In my classroom, I would love for the last 15-20 minutes of the day to consist of silent reading. I think this would be a beneficial way to end the day as well as get the kids ready to leave for the day. I would also incorporate this time as catching up on homework time. If there were any assignments students needed to catch up on, this would be their opportunity to do so.There would also be a separate time to read aloud, which would be another time during the day. I would also use that read aloud time as a segway into another subject. I feel like reading gets kids calm and ready to move on to the next thing.
I didn't think about reading at the end of the day, that could be a good way to end on a good note and help mellow them out. Reading aloud is great practice! I was in a classroom that had stations for reading/writing and one station has a puppet show set, different days have different stories and stick puppets. They have to read a script and they record their play to post on their classroom site. Just thought that was a fun idea!
ReplyDeleteI also chose to do my post over SSR. I feel like ending the day with SSR, you might have days where you run out of time to do it unless you are very tight on time for your SSR time. I also feel like kids might be too wound up at the end of the day to actually sit down and read before going home, but it also might be a great way to end the day!
ReplyDeleteRachel has some good points, but I did some of my SSR at the end of the day.
