EDUC 337- Class #1

Give a "glow and a grow"

In our first couple of chapters, there were a few key points that stuck out to me. The first my (which is my favorite) was give a "glow and a grow." This phrase refers to giving students honest praise along with specific direction on how to improve. An example would be:

"I love the way you used the pictures in the book to make a prediction, but what is the author trying to show us or make us aware of? What's the title of this book?"

Another key topic I enjoyed was the ways in which teachers can create an enticing classroom. This includes desk/tables efficient for natural movement; colorful boards, signs, calendars, etc; organization; and a table or area for small group work.

  1. I really liked the "glow and grow" as well. To me, this shows how we are changing in our methods of teaching- by providing positives with redirection rather than only correcting and not pointing out what they did well. ELA is a process and students should be praised for their successes as well as being able to receive constructive criticism to help them progress more. I have gotten to observe many teachers and some of the "old school" methods from veteran teachers can be a bit harsh and discouraging to students who are trying and receiving no praise for the things they are doing well with. Even adults can relate tot his- if you have a boss who only points out what you do wrong and gives no good feedback on how to improve and no praise at all- we also feel discouraged, upset, and can sometimes give up. I think this is a method we can use with our students as well as with adults we interact with.

  2. This is a great thing to do! I wish more teachers used the "glow and grow" technique because I think student's would respond in a positive way. Our upper level class rooms, we have flexible seating; couches, wobble chairs, standing desks, and floor chairs. The student's love getting the choice of their seats at the appropriate times of the day.
